38 Londres (38 London Street)
38 Londres street was once the headquarters for the socialist party (Arce 2004). After the coup it was confiscated and converted into a detainment and torture center by DINA and later CNI. To cover up the evidence CNI operatives later changed the building number to 40 and converted the center into a museum for the Country’s founder. The idea being that any complaints received would point to a non-existent address.
In 2007 the O’Higgins institute was moved across the street and the building was once again converted. This time it was converted into a memorial for all those who had been tortured and murdered inside of 38 Londres street. The exterior of the building was cleaned and the official address was returned to 38 Londres street (Londres 38). The most surprising thing to me when I visited Londres 38 was how busy the street is. This building is in a mixed commercial and residential area near a main street. How could no one have seen or heard anything? For more information please see the official website. It is in Spanish but you can translate using google translator or altavista.com: http://www.londres38.cl/1937/propertyvalue-30336.html |
La Moneda
Villa Grimaldi
Known to the military as Cuartel Terranova, Villa Grimaldi was one of the most notorious prison and torture centers. An estimated 4500 people were detained in this center. Conservative estimates indicate that at least 226 of them were murdered while detained at Villa Grimaldi. Today the camp is a public park to promote peace. A more detailed background of Villa Grimaldi is depicted in a subpage of this webpage
