During the dictatorship, the babies delivered during detainment were systematically stolen from their mothers and adopted by families with ties to the military. The mothers were never seen or heard from again after giving birth. After a 16 year long trial, Jorge Videla has been convicted for masterminding the stolen baby operation.
Las Abuelas (Grandmothers) estimate that there were 500 babies stolen during the dictatorship. Since the end of the dictatorship 105 of them have been identified and reunited with their families. Las Abuelas convinced the Kirchner administration to instate a DNA database to help those who believe they were one of the stolen children identify themselves. Many are reluctant to come forward because their adoptive parents could face a prison sentence for kidnapping.
If you would like to know more about the children’s experiences I recommend a film called “Catuiva.”
